Is Your Shadow Holding You Back – Take the Quiz

Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” — Carl Jung

Almost 10 years ago, I was introduced to an approach to psychological growth that continues to change my life. Through my teachers and the practices I’ve learned, I have gained more confidence, authenticity, and access to a vast source of mental and physical energy, which I found within myself. It is called shadow integration.

The shadow is the part of us that is made up of all that we hide from others: our shame, our fears and our wounds, but also our divine spirit, our blinding beauty, and our hidden talents.

Shadow integration involves shining light into the dark caves of our minds to reveal the gold that is stored there. I had been on a continuous improvement journey for nearly my whole life and I began to realize something. I had been looking in all the wrong places.

Our true power is not found in conforming to the expectations of others, it is not found in the self-improvement classes, nor is it found by overlooking our human condition. It is found in the dazzling darkness of the unconscious mind. The light we find here is brighter than any light we can imagine.

The shadow is neither passive nor dormant. It demands attention. As individuals, we project our shadows onto others and we are often triggered by those who carry similar shadow elements to our own. Leaders cast their shadows into their organizations which can result in mixed messages, confusion, and even chaos. Parents cast their shadows onto their children, creating a new generation to carry their fears and biases forward.

The shadow doesn’t speak in linear language but rather in symbols and images. This is the reason that art journaling is so effective in expanding self-awareness. In art journaling we learn how to access images, put them on on papers to learn the inward significance of those images, and then we learn to “read” those meaning.
